Giardini visit (and other spaces of interest)

Giardini della Biennale

I have set out to visit the 'Giardini' today, a great part of the biennale wich hosts pavilions from all over the world, including France and UK.
It is my last day off for  the week before going back to working in the British Pavilion. 

As soon as I arrive in the park I realise I feel that I should have worn the dress which i am planning to wear for a performance i am planning to do as part of my search for meaning and sense-making. 

I still have 20 days left, during which I am sure i will see new truth emerging while making sense of the works. 

Spending time with the works of interest will be precious.

Today can be considered as art/sightseeing. 



I can see as many Pavilions as possible and point out the ones that I feel are truly addressing  social engagement. 

I will make some notes about  the ways I think people are engaging.
I will later come back to the dress and shape what i am trying to gather.

There is a lot of art in Venice. 
I am sure I can not resolve  it all, makes sense of it all. 
I would rather find a true story which will inspire me.
Art is about accepting and being conscious of  the selection process that operates while making.I noticed in Cathy Wilkes work an extreme precision in the selection of objects and their place in the space. 

What is left speaks for what is lost. 

In the Giardini today I will observe where I need to place myself within the work as a visitor, as an audience.
My engagement as a human being, how I make sense of it, and how I can help making sense for others through my work, weither as an artist, a teacher, a mediator in the pavilion, a mother, a daughter...

I am choosing to go unbranded today. 
I am anonymous visitor of the place.

French Pavilion by Awesome Laure Provost! a must feel!


The French pavilion in incredible immersive experience; the film installation is a slippery tapestry, melting pot of  sensory ocean experience. Feeling moved, happy, sad, stimulated. Indulgent reference to sensory surrealist film "un Chien Andalou" and to Yves Klein leap in the void! Finishing with a mist shower. 
I want to stay there. 
Will revisit.
Looking to interviewing Nicolas, one of the french dancers in the film.


Spanish Pavilion Pavilion number one next performance on film two people standing blowing in a microphone making cease and wings and the film the artist of talking telling a story a long story to a figure of a woman in a Windows culture then back in a gallery space the artist sitting next to inflated diamond figures pink black telling the story again perhaps another one a chair with a cast bronze cast version of that strange shape and Fleetwood a lump some text fragments pne Gentry North 32nd American English similar strange Thailand fragmented voices
Chinese takeaway Tora prison performance formans as a conversation from another conversation framed spread around the room gender.

I realised that the inflated shapes look like holes, vaginas growing in the space. Definit gender conversation complex shapes drawn. 
I move on.

Why do I move on the space the conversation in the gallery does not feed me new knowledge, Cant see the new or maybe i just think I know. 
I don't know. the work does  not speak my truth?
I don't speak my truth through the work? I don't discover my truth through this work.
Perhaps it is just not the time for me to explore this.


Belgium





Who are the characters in this space who are the audience are we the fools? Are we the spinning lady? Are we the artists the two actors who got stuck in time in Venice? The painter poisoning the audience?
The cages are defined by Society. Which side of the cage do we stand? Within which cage are we and do we present ourselves? How when do we become redundant from our function in society? Who decides which side of the cage  we are? The description in the book define the character through the eyes of others in society, of the place we have taken and the place we refuse to take? The caged characters seem to be there because  they have refused to be defined. They have taken other options, hgave negotiated their identity and found stratagem for survival.

The more time you spend with the characters the more you realise that the ones who are not in the cage have really gone crazy. They are probably the strangest characters, the weirdest and most dangerous.

I cant help but love the spinning lady but in that closeness, i can see that she spins her life away; she's been spinning for years and years and years despite the Industrial Revolution despite any so called progress, she's still doing the same thing and keeps her world going  round and round. She  keeps herself in a safe circle, avoiding change.

I haven't read everything nor explored every character but I have the book I can move on with the book I can look back at it the Little Book act as a precious objects that allows for later reflection the characters in the cage were the one that didn't fit in rejected by Society the characters in the Santa space where in fact the most dangerous one the ones that are the profession in official functions but also hiding hiding the truth and perhaps developing psychotic behaviours because restraints refrained by their functions I'm realising right now but that's because I spent so much time with the work of Cathy Wilkes  that I'm willing to spend more time with each work in my head and my thoughts. I am alone so I have to interpret it alone.
 I will speak later of the most memorable part with colleagues which shows the usefulness of sharing and reflecting collectively in this residency.





Finland 




A strange juxtaposition of traditional materials mixed with a film in the factory balloon factory were people are made to play a stange game by an invisible  character watching over them. The singer strangely reminds me of how  closed the space feels. The characters are mixed with feelings of identity where they hover from playing arguing -a mirror of life or hell? 
(Close to Sartre's Huis-Clos). Being together in such a closed space almost buried in water this is juxtaposed against the a series of and staffs/ batons which looks like pilgrims battons inspired by traditional Finnish native cultures. A tale about the  traditional culture against our current Society facing crisis and perhaps maybe a certain death. 
The end of something. 
 It's about a society waiting for a 'miracle'. What will be the miracle when the ice has all melted?
